Well, looky what we have here
Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, solidiers and civillians, afflicted and comfortable, it's a monumental day.
Brace yourselves. Might want to sit down first. Take a few deep breaths. Heck, make yourself an iced tea. With lemons.
Bush took responsiblity for something.
No, no, I'm not kidding. And I'm not talking about those mistakes he made in appointments that he wouldn't bring up during the debates because he didn't want to hurt anyone's feelings. According to an Associated Press article, Bush said "To the extent the federal government didn't fully do its job right, I take responsiblity." We've made a lot of progress today, haven't we, George. Just a week ago he was telling Michael Brown he was doing a heck of a job. Bush had been assuming that the same stupid tricks that had gotten him out of the Abu Gharib thing, and the "Mission Accomplished" blunder, and the Downing Street Memo, and the whole business with Richard Clark would get him out of this one, too.
I'm not exactly sure why he decided flatly denying reality and spouting drivel like, "we're doing hard work," and "there'll be time to play the blame game later," and "we're staying the course" wouldn't get him very far this time. Maybe he realized that counting on all of these problems to snowball during his predecessor's turn didn't always work, and that now there was an entire city levelled because of some policy errors he had made. Maybe Republican incumbents from all over the country showed up in his office with tire irons and cricket bats and told him it was time he took one for the team, that Michael Brown really couldn't be the only casualty of a mess like this (aside from, of course, all of the poor blacks in New Orleans that were stranded in fetid water for days on end -- they don't care about them anyway. They don't vote as often as reactionary Christians). Or maybe, just maybe, someone started jamming the signal that Karl Rove's band of demons with some kind of electromagnetic signals had been broadcasting to him, and he's decided to wake up to the human inside of him.
Man, I can't get over it. Let's see that again. "To the extent the federal government didn't fully do its job right, I take responsibility," Bush said. Now, he didn't acknowledge that the government didn't do its job at all right (instead of just fully right), but still, it's a start.
Love and Peace or else -- U2
